The Joan Sutherland & Richard Bonynge Scholarship Programme

The Foundation’s Scholarship Programme assists between ten and twenty artists each year through the Bel Canto Award, Sydney International Song Prize and Study Grant programme. Applicants are judged by panels of international judges through various stages of each competition and/or via video links. Each applicant must provide a detailed study plan outlining how they intend to make use of the scholarships funds which is monitored closely to ensure the funds are used properly.

The Scholarship programme is a vital initiative that helps young artists to develop their craft and fulfil their given potential. The Foundation assists in guiding its winners to ensure a path to a career on the opera and concert hall stages of the world with many of our alumni now enjoying international success. The Foundation’s aim is to continue educating and encouraging exceptional musicians to ensure a rich, musical heritage is forever present in our world.

A message from Richard Bonynge

"Joan and I have been extremely fortunate in our lives and it has long been our wish for a foundation to be established so that we could help young singers. With the world in turmoil it becomes ever more difficult for young people at the start of their careers. I am immensely grateful for the generosity of our caring supporters and fervently hope to encourage many more opera lovers to help ensure continuity in the art of bel canto.”
Richard Bonynge, AC CBE
